If installed, the license plate light may aim rearward and not towards the license plate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

Risk A license plate light aimed toward other drivers may increase the risk of a crash.
